ClassCaption
Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started
What is ClassCaption?
ClassCaption is a browser-based AI captioning and study tool designed for post-secondary students who are Deaf or hard of hearing, or who have acquired brain injuries or other learning differences. It provides live real-time transcription during class and, when a session ends, automatically generates a structured study package, called ClassCards, built entirely from what was said in that lecture.
What do I need to use ClassCaption?
ClassCaption runs entirely in your web browser, no software installation is required. You will need:
- A laptop, desktop, Chromebook, or tablet with a modern web browser (Chrome is recommended)
- A wireless microphone for in-person classes, or access to system audio for online/hybrid classes
An active ClassCaption account
Does ClassCaption require any installation or plugins?
No. ClassCaption is fully web-based. Open your browser, go to app.classcaption.com, sign in, and you are ready to start. There is nothing to download or install.
Which browsers does ClassCaption work with?
Google Chrome is recommended for the best experience. ClassCaption uses browser technologies for live audio capture and local storage that are fully supported in Chrome. Other Chromium-based browsers such as Microsoft Edge have been tested and work, but Chrome is the main tested and supported option.
Recording A Session
How do I start a live transcription session?
Sign in to ClassCaption, select New Session, choose your audio source (microphone or system audio), and define any other session items, such as Class Name, Language, Folder and if you want to Save Audio for Replay. Then click Continue to Recording.
On the next screen, click Start Recording. ClassCaption will begin transcribing in real time. When your class ends, click Stop Recording and ClassCaption will automatically generate your ClassCards study package.
What is the difference between Microphone and System Audio?
Microphone mode captures audio from your device's microphone, which is ideal for in-person classes where you are sitting in a classroom with an instructor. System Audio mode captures audio playing directly from your computer, which is ideal for online classes, Zoom or Teams meetings, recorded lecture videos, or YouTube content.
Note: System audio capture requires you to share your screen in the browser dialogue that appears. Select the tab or window playing the audio and ensure the Share audio option is checked.
Can I use ClassCaption for recorded lectures or uploaded audio files?
Yes. ClassCaption supports uploading pre-recorded audio files. If you have a YouTube, Vimeo, or recorded video from a Moodle or Brightspace session, you can start ClassCaption as normal, select the System Audio option, then Continue to Recording. Once in the new modal, click Start Recording, and you will be prompted for the recorded file. Select it and ensure you turn on the Share Audio option. ClassCaption will transcribe the content and generate ClassCards automatically, the same as it would for a live session.
Can ClassCaption transcribe mathematical content?
ClassCaption accurately transcribes spoken mathematical explanations. For example, a professor explaining how to solve an equation. However, it does not convert spoken math into formatted notation or rendered equations. The phrase 'the integral of x squared' will appear as spoken text, not as a typeset formula. If your courses are heavily mathematics-based, this is worth factoring into your expectations.
Does ClassCaption support languages other than English?
Your content goes here. Edit or remove this text inline or in the module Content settings. You can also style every aspect of this content in the module Design settings and even apply custom CSS to this text in the module Advanced settings.
What happens if my instructor speaks very quickly or uses technical terminology?
ClassCaption uses one of the most accurate real-time speech recognition models currently available. It performs well across a range of speaking speeds and accents and has shown to work well with highly technical or discipline-specific vocabulary.
ClassCards & Study Materials
What are ClassCards?
ClassCards are a structured study package automatically generated at the end of every session. They are built entirely from what was said in your specific class, not from a textbook or generic database. A ClassCards package contains seven sections:
- Session Summary - a concise overview of the class
- Key Concepts & Definitions - important terms explained in context
- Questions to Consider - reflection questions based on the lecture
- Action Items - specific follow-up tasks from the session
- What Matters Most - the highest-priority takeaways
- Your Study Path - three to four concrete, session-specific study actions
- Full Transcript - the complete transcript of the session
How long does it take for ClassCards to be generated after a session ends?
ClassCards generation typically begins within a few seconds of stopping a recording and is completed within approximately 20 seconds for a typical class session. Longer sessions with dense content may take slightly more time.
Will the reading level of ClassCards match my course level?
Yes. Because ClassCards are generated from your actual lecture transcript, the complexity of the output reflects the complexity of what your instructor said. A foundational literacy class and a graduate-level seminar will produce very different ClassCards because they started from different transcripts. The tool adapts to the session, not the other way around.
Can I export my ClassCards?
Yes. ClassCards can be exported as a formatted PDF directly from the session view. The PDF is designed to be clear, well-organized, and suitable for sharing with an accessibility advisor or keeping as a study reference.
Audio Replay
What is Audio Replay?
Audio Replay lets you tap or click on any word in your transcript to hear the audio from that exact moment in the recording. It also supports keyword search. Type a term and jump directly to every point in the session where that word was spoken. This is particularly useful for reviewing fast-paced explanations or double-checking something you weren't sure you heard correctly.
Where is my session audio stored?
Session audio is stored locally on your device using IndexedDB, a standard browser storage technology. Your audio never leaves your device and it is not uploaded to any server. This means your recordings remain private and accessible even without an internet connection after the session is saved.
Will my audio still be there if I close my browser and come back later?
Yes. Audio stored in IndexedDB persists across browser sessions as long as you do not clear your browser data or use private/incognito browsing mode. If you regularly clear your browser history or cookies, your stored audio may be removed.
Note: Students on institutional Chromebooks with managed device policies that clear browser data on logout should be aware that locally stored audio may not persist between login sessions. Check with your institution's IT department if you are unsure.
Chromebook Compatability
Does ClassCaption work on a Chromebook?
Yes. ClassCaption is fully compatible with Chromebooks. It runs in the Chrome browser, which supports all of the technologies ClassCaption uses, including live transcription, local audio storage via IndexedDB, and PDF export. PDF files download to the Chromebook's Downloads folder and can be moved to Google Drive from there.
Is there anything that works differently on a Chromebook?
For most students, the experience on a Chromebook is identical to any other laptop. Two things are worth being aware of:
- Microphone access: Some Chromebooks in institutional settings have IT policies that restrict microphone access in the browser. If ClassCaption cannot access your microphone, check with your institution's IT department or accessibility office.
- System audio capture: The option to share system audio may not appear or may be limited on some Chromebook models depending on the ChromeOS version. Microphone recording and all file upload features are unaffected.
Account Types
What is the difference between a Student account and an Advisor account?
A Student account is a full-access subscription account with no session length limit. It is priced at $38.95 per month or $450.00 per year. An Advisor account is available to accessibility coordinators and disability services staff at no charge, and provides full access to the app with a 15-minute limit per session. The 15-minute limit is per session and Advisors can run as many sessions as they need, but limited to the session limit.
How do I request an Advisor account?
Contact Duane O'Geil directly at dogeil@indreporters.com or by phone at 403.265.2550 ext. 2. Advisor accounts are set up personally to ensure you have everything you need to evaluate ClassCaption for your students.
How does an Advisor account expire?
Advisor accounts do not expire. Student accounts are on an annual subscription and renew yearly.
Privacy & Data
Is my transcript data private?
Yes. Transcripts and session data are stored in your ClassCaption account and are not shared with any third parties. Session audio is stored locally on your device and is never uploaded to any server.
Is ClassCaption WCAG compliant?
ClassCaption is designed with accessibility as its core purpose. Accessibility compliance details are available on request. Please contact us directly if your institution has specific WCAG or AODA requirements to evaluate.
